Mickies Dairy Bar, located in Madison Wisconsin, is a small hole in the wall restaurant that has a great selection of breakfast items, bakery items, sandwiches, and full entrees. It was opened back in 1946 and is conveniently located across the street from the UW Madison Camp Randall Stadium (Go Badgers!). The prices at Mickies are all very reasonable, but it is worth noting that this is a cash only establishment. They do have a conveniently located ATM at the restaurant if you do not have cash on you.
We decided to order a scrambler, meatloaf sandwich lunch plate, and a chicken noodle soup to-go. The scrambler consisted of three scrambled eggs with sausage, yanks (smashed potatoes), light gravy on top, and two slices of toast. The scrambled eggs were buttery and delicious – no ketchup needed! The yanks needed a bit more seasoning as they tasted like basic potatoes. And the toast was just toast.
The meatloaf sandwich was not what I expected. It was a slice of meatloaf between two whole wheat slices of bread and doused in gravy. The gravy tasted great, but it was kind of boring at the same time.
The chicken noodle soup was delicious and nothing else to add there. Because we live a bit away from Madison, the takeout containers did not fare well. All of the steam from the food started to disintegrate the containers, and there was actually a hole in the bottom of the scrambler container. It was really too bad about the containers, but no real fault of the establishment.
Overall a delicious place to come for breakfast or brunch! Probably best to dine-in, but don’t forget your cash at home!
