Sorry upfront, I’m really bad about taking pictures of the process. This is like a side hobby of a side hobby for me after all. Also, who knows if Yams will ever get around to writing something which is hilarious because we did this for her. Regardless, let’s look at my tabletop ready paint jobs.
Mixed emotions about this guy. Pretty happy with the end product, but was not a smooth ride. Making the transition from sloppy slap chop back to my usual style was a bumpy road. Also, my paint brushes are kind of just trash now. This is why I buy the cheap ones, because I DO NOT take care of these things. Used a brown speedpaint on the cloak. It ended up being the perfect shade but the brush still somehow had metallic flecks in it? Not sure how that happened because I do rinse my brushes. Maybe it picked up residue from the hard palette but who knows. Also, just in general it settled poorly. I’ve had this happen with washes before I got the hang of them but I never had issues with speed paints. I still have nightmares from when this happened to my red hood that I painted for the Batman miniatures game. I don’t often fix things on minis after the fact so I definitely just hid the back of his jacket on my painted shelf. So, I had to cover up most of the cloak with a different shade of brown acrylic paint. This covered up all of the shade so I just made the new coat the shade and added a highlight. Didn’t end up being my favorite but better than the pooling mess that was the cloak post speedpaint.
I really enjoy how the orange turned out. It was just nuclear sunrise speedpaint with a generic orange acrylic highlight. Really makes the skin pop. For his lightsaber I tried to do a blue speedpaint with a thin white line to show it was emanating light. The white line did NOT end up being thin…. I tried to glaze blue over it to fix it but spoilers, I don’t know how to glaze…. Ended with an okay-ish light blue stick but eh It’s fine.
Now to talk about those gauntlets…. Man did they hurt my soul. They’re just white which is great because my airbrush did all the work there. But man, could I not get the red on there. I think the crevices weren’t deep enough. I tried a speedpaint and it filled the holes but of course also coated the outside of it. So, I painted it white again and then tried mixing red paint with a really old matte medium. This worked literally probably the worst. So, back to white we went again. This time I tried doing a normal red and then painting the gauntlet white around the holes but this didn’t work because the holes were just too shallow and small. Finally I did what I should have done from the beginning and have literally done on every other Jedi I painted but somehow forgot about…. I took red paint, watered it down so it was basically just water, and then applied it. This worked-ish but at this point I’d already filled those holes so many times that they were basically at capacity. Pause for naughty jokes. This only lightly coated the outside of the gauntlet but also barely left red where I wanted it. I cleaned up the gauntlet a bit and called it good. You can’t even see it in the photos so I don’t know why I just spent 5 minutes typing about it. So hopefully you can’t notice it on the table either.
Not a fan of these guys. I love what a gray airbrush from below and a white from above does for clones. The issue is any mistakes on these guys are absolutely killer to fix because I can’t match the gradient very well. I tried to apply a thinned down wash of nuln oil to make the lines pop but man they just came out super dirty looking. I tried to fix it by painting white on top but it looked like trash. Personally I do prefer a more clean look to my minis and really can’t bring myself to paint battle damage or dirt in my models. So, I did something I never do, I repainted them. Just redid the airbrush and this time didn’t apply the wash. I got a decent gradient match this go around to fix mistakes but using a super light gray instead of white to fix my mistakes. Overall, I still don’t like how they look but not because of the choices I made and moreso because I don’t like the colours and placements of the symbols on their helmets. Although I’m sure someone made them look sweet. The brown on the base looks splotchy but that’s because I’m going to be glueing static grass there so I didn’t really care about the brown there.
All that’s left is finishing Padme and Padawan Ahsoka then I’m good for Adepticon. I’m partially through Ahsoka now but not too far. I don’t know what I’m dragging my feet with Padme I literally just have to do her little dress bulbs and I’m done but man I just don’t wanna. I do really enjoy painting but man I think I’m just ready to be cranking out games.
