I think Conquest (First Blood & Last Argument of Kings) are good games but not amazing games, for me personally. What has kept me playing, though, has really been these models. Our group has said time and again how these models are just awesome, and they’re huge! Their website pictures just don’t do these models justice either. Several times I got a unit for gameplay that I thought was so-so and then after I was done assembling them I was just blown away by how cool they were. Most importantly they lend themselves really well to speed painting. I’ve recently burnt myself out a bit from my typical painting style of airbrushing, base coating, and highlights. So, it has been refreshing to paint recklessly and quickly with these guys knowing that when they’re in a group of 12, no one is looking at the nitty gritty details.
The skin tone has to be dry brushed on later because I’m not happy with how any of the Caucasian speed paints work.
The colour scheme might seem odd. I usually try to go purely off of the official colour schemes in games but it was really hard to tell what colours were being used in the website photos and I didn’t find any good reference pictures. So, I just did as close as I could make out. There is a distinct orange-brown used a lot in the reference photos that I always had the intention to add but honestly didn’t have the heart to do on 20 of the 24 raiders.
Here is what I have painted for conquest. Already a decent amount in my opinion. Looking forward to painting the UGR next, or maybe the sea jotnar, because that thing is a masterpiece.
